Lottery Players Still Awaiting Decision from Texas Supreme Court

Over 1,000 lottery players in Texas are still awaiting a decision from the Texas Supreme Court as to whether the private company that runs the Texas Lottery can be held liable for fraud. The Supreme Court is considering a claim by GTECH Corporation (n/k/a IGT) that it is immune from fraud suits because it is a government contractor. The court’s decision will determine whether all 7 million lottery players in Texas are protected by the state’s consumer protection laws.

The case pending before the Court, GTECH v. James Steele, et al. , Case No. 03-16-00172-CV, was argued before the Court on December 3, 2019. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the Texas Supreme Court is continuing to clear its docket and apparently plans to render opinions and decisions on all pending cases by the end of June.

If you are interested in the case or if you are one of the many lottery players who filed suit, you can follow this blog to get an immediate notification when the Court issues its opinion. The Court tends to issue its opinions on Fridays so log in every Friday evening to see if an opinion has been issued.
